宋淳煕間趙汝愚等聞朱熹“得道統(tǒng)之正”，乃建館城冠山東峰，延朱熹主講其中。從弟汝靚、子崇憲及曹建等師事之。朱熹題其堂曰“云鳳堂”。后為人所據(jù)。李榮庭贖復(fù)之。后又為兵毀。
明初一度入于寺。弘治二年(1489)知縣沈時(shí)重建于絕頂。不久又毀于戰(zhàn)火，正德六年(1511)巡撫任漢命知縣徐冠遷建于冠山之中峰。中構(gòu)堂5間，南向有祠，堂之東仍構(gòu)云鳳堂，西筑講堂，東西廊號房以處講學(xué)者。規(guī)制為之一新。提學(xué)副使李夢陽為記。萬歷八年(1580)復(fù)廢。繼就二賢祠基址重建，明末圮。清順治十一年(1654)興屯道翟風(fēng)翥墮修，題額“高風(fēng)百世”。內(nèi)祀朱熹，以趙汝愚、趙汝靚、曹建、柴元裕、饒魯、胡居仁等配享。翟自為記。
康熙十二年(1673)知縣江南齡會(huì)同邑士民增建，自為記。嘉慶十五年(1810)重修云鳳堂、千越亭、集義堂、慎獨(dú)堂、麗澤堂、文昌宮、魁星閣，后又在門外階下建入德門坊，道光三年(1823)書“明體達(dá)用”橫匾與“讀書志在圣賢，為官心存君國”聯(lián)語懸之。同治七年(1868)邑人重修。知縣常山鳳立《捐置東山書院膏火經(jīng)費(fèi)善后規(guī)條》，立定經(jīng)費(fèi)管理、生徒膏火額數(shù)與發(fā)放、扣除，考課取錄及對生童的獎(jiǎng)懲制度等。

跨入大門，出現(xiàn)在我面前的是一條石板拼成的小路。路旁有一條青青的小河，河岸有一大片紫藤，，枝條浸在清徹的水里，真像一個(gè)個(gè)婀娜多姿的少女在梳洗長長的發(fā)辮。水面泛起微微的波紋，原來是一條小魚悄悄地把頭探出水面，調(diào)皮的吹了一個(gè)小泡泡又潛入水底。
我們走上通向書院正門的石板橋，路兩旁那高大而挺拔的松樹像歡迎我的到來。書院前坪景色讓我眼前一亮，小草從土里鉆出來，綠油油的，像剛?cè)具^似的;草地中央是青翠欲滴的鳳尾竹，像久別重逢的兄弟姐妹擁抱在一起。
進(jìn)入書院大門，映入眼前的是兩棵漂亮的白玉蘭樹，那盛開的花朵，就如夜空中同時(shí)點(diǎn)亮的一盞盞蓮花燈，又像少女潔白的舞裙。我被這一自然奇觀吸引住了，向前走是毛澤東的銅像，銅像高大魁梧，令人肅然起敬。我不由得想起《恰同學(xué)少年》中，少年毛澤東那朝氣蓬勃的形象，耳中響起“山川在我腳下，大地在我懷中”的吶喊。我恭恭敬敬的朝主席行了一個(gè)隊(duì)禮，毛主席嘴角露著笑意，似乎在鼓勵(lì)我。經(jīng)過東齋，來到毛澤東讀書的教室，里面擺著幾行古老的座位，有一個(gè)位子上寫著：毛澤東坐過的座位。我在上面特意坐了一下，心想：我如果也能像毛澤東爺爺一樣能夠造福百姓就好了。
我愛東山學(xué)校，這里不僅是一個(gè)風(fēng)景美麗的地方，也是一代偉人的母校。
