《silent night -平安夜 》(德語：stille nacht, heilige nacht)是一首非常流行的傳統圣誕歌曲。其原始的歌詞由josef mohr用德語寫成，作曲則是由奧地利一所小學的校長franz gruber完成。此歌被翻譯成世界上超過44種語言，是最流行的聖誕歌曲。沒有音樂伴奏人們也會經常吟唱。
1818年12月25日，這首頌歌第一次在奧地利奧本多夫(oberndorf)的尼古拉教堂演出。mohr雖在2年前就寫出了歌詞，但在這個平安夜才帶給gruber，請他編一首吉他伴奏曲子。他這樣做的原因不明，也許mohr只是想為午夜彌撒作一首新的頌歌;另有傳說當晚尼古拉教堂的管風琴不能工作(說因為老鼠咬壞了管風琴的風箱)。
《平安夜》原始手稿已經遺失，不過1995年發現了一份經研究確定于為mohr寫于1820年左右的手稿，顯示mohr在1816年被分配到奧地利mariapfarr清教徒教堂時寫了歌詞，還顯示gruber在1818年曾為為歌詞作曲。這是現存的最早的手稿，也是唯一由mohr的筆跡所寫。gruber所作的樂曲由于受到當地音樂的影響，其旋律類似于奧地利民間音樂和岳得爾歌。
關于這首歌的另一個說法是，第一次演出后，它很快就被人們忘記了，直到修管風琴的師傅1825年發現了手稿才重新上演。gruber在貫穿他的整個生命的時間里都在改編它。現有的mohr改編版(約1820年)保存在薩爾茲堡carolino augusteum博物館。
