"All I know about leadership I learned from . . ." What items could a person use to describe leadership qualities?

Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I have participated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I was quiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared to meet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half way through my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me and asked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her and did not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I became frustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a great time. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. In my sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myself and took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out the answer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of this question.

When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it was the capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two very broad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what this word actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describe what leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxious task. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or a rubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, I realized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a person wants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator can add everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what is unnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type of problem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader has to be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible plan. Leaders have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. They have to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounce back up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can be thrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are also leadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that is thrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacks and never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never be closed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he or she cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be able to "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than just having authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leader has to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be able to combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the background and watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should not delegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and be versatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could lead effectively, even if my leadership style is different from other individuals. When I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not have these qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. I was too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. I did not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was never able to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group and telling everyone what to do When I was a freshman, I thought leadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict. I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about being yourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be a good leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was not trueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the applicationprocess. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing numberof applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is alsoincreasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a collegerecommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter.

A high school transcript can help tell an admissions office a lot about acandidate, but a college recommendation letter provides an opportunity for themto see the whole person. While recommendation letters are never a bad idea toinclude in the application, even if the college does not require one, manycolleges do necessitate the inclusion of one. Here is some advice to keep inmind when writing a college recommendation letter:

Know the candidate - it may sound obvious, but it is important that youknow the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendationletter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written forcandidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harmthan good.

How you know the candidate - when you write a college recommendationletter, make sure to include how you know the candidate as well as the length oftime you have known that person.

Provide relevant information - be sure to find out the purpose of therecommendation so as to provide relevant information about the candidate and hisor her specific qualifications. If the recommendation is to supplement anapplication, discuss how that person is an appropriate candidate for the collegehe or she is applying to. Despite its purpose, however, the overall goal of acollege recommendation letter is to attest to the capabilities and character ofthe candidate.

Obtain a rsum - another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letteris to first obtain the student's rsum with a listing of his or her GPA,activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experienceand special skills. The more information you have about a particular candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.

Personalize the letter - to help make the letter more personal, beforewriting a college recommendation letter, it is important to determine the personto whom the letter should be addressed. If the student is unaware of the name, the letter may begin "Dear Selection Committee."

Proofread the letter - one of the most important tips on how to write acollege recommendation letter is making sure to proofread it when finished. Aletter containing grammatical errors will appear unprofessional and may leave anegative impression.

Mailing the letter - establish with the student whether the recommendationletter must be mailed in an official envelope from your institution, or if itcan be included with the application. If it is to accompany the application, return the letter to the candidate in a sealed envelope.

Determine the deadline - double-check with the student as to the deadlineof the college recommendation letter. Ideally, you will be given an adequateamount of time to complete a positive, detailed letter, however, the mostimportant detail is that it is received before the application deadline.

Save the letter - when you have finished writing a recommendation, be sureto save it in order to help make writing the next college recommendation lettereasier. The student will likely be applying to more than one school and may askthat you write a separate recommendation for each one. Although it is importantthat each letter is tailored to the application at hand, select information canbe recycled for multiple letters. It is more convenient to tailor the originalpassage than to repetitively recollect the advice on how to write a collegerecommendation.

  What Colleges Really Want

Colleges place a large emphasis on a student's academic ability becausewhat is accomplished in high school is the strongest predictor of their academicsuccess in college. What colleges really want, however, is a win-win situation. They want to admit students who will thrive at their institution, not only forthe student's benefit, but for their own as well. As more and more studentsbecome college-bound, colleges and universities will become increasinglyselective, placing more emphasis on the ability to know how to write a collegerecommendation letter.

As a teacher, counselor, employer or personal acquaintance of acollege-bound teen, you may at some point receive a request for help in writinga college recommendation letter. These students are not only placing their trustin you, they are putting you in the unique position to make an impact on whetheror not they are admitted to their college of choice. Following this advice onhow to write a college recommendation will help to ensure a professional letterand give your candidate a greater likelihood of being accepted into his or hercollege of choice.

Mailing the letter - establish with the student whether the recommendation letter must be mailed in an official envelope from your institution, or if it can be included with the application. If it is to accompany the application, return the letter to the candidate in a sealed envelope.

Determine the deadline - double-check with the student as to the deadline of the college recommendation letter. Ideally, you will be given an adequate amount of time to complete a positive, detailed letter, however, the most important detail is that it is received before the application deadline.

Save the letter - when you have finished writing a recommendation, be sure to save it in order to help make writing the next college recommendation letter easier. The student will likely be applying to more than one school and may ask that you write a separate recommendation for each one. Although it is important that each letter is tailored to the application at hand, select information can be recycled for multiple letters. It is more convenient to tailor the original passage than to repetitively recollect the advice on how to write a college recommendation.

  What Colleges Really Want

Colleges place a large emphasis on a student's academic ability because what is accomplished in high school is the strongest predictor of their academic success in college. What colleges really want, however, is a win-win situation. They want to admit students who will thrive at their institution, not only for the student's benefit, but for their own as well. As more and more students become college-bound, colleges and universities will become increasingly selective, placing more emphasis on the ability to know how to write a college recommendation letter.

As a teacher, counselor, employer or personal acquaintance of a college-bound teen, you may at some point receive a request for help in writing a college recommendation letter. These students are not only placing their trust in you, they are putting you in the unique position to make an impact on whether or not they are admitted to their college of choice. Following this advice on how to write a college recommendation will help to ensure a professional letter and give your candidate a greater likelihood of being accepted into his or her college of choice.

Letters of recommendation are a very important part of the application process. As colleges become more and more sought out from the increasing number of applicants each year, the need to stand out from the competition is also increasing. Below we will provide helpful information on how to write a college recommendation as well as advice for tailoring each letter.

Know the candidate - it may sound obvious, but it is important that you know the candidate well. After all, how can you write a college recommendation letter for a someone you know little about? Recommendations written for candidates with a vague familiarity are often identifiable and can do more harm than good.

Obtain a rsum - another tip on how to write a collage recommendation letter is to first obtain the student's rsum with a listing of his or her GPA, activities, awards, leadership roles, community service, employment experience and special skills. The more information you have about a particular candidate, the more constructive your recommendation can be.

  Applied Program:Organizational Behavior

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In thepast, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and thecorporate cultures of the companies were all different. i take great pleasure in recommending wang yong, one of my favoritestudents, for admission into your distinguished graduate program.

mr. wang was admitted in 1986 at 14 years of age into the special class forthe gifted youths, my university's unique program that caters to theintellectual needs of unusually talented chinese youngsters. it was a rareprivilege he earned with his nearly impeccable academic performance through theyears of his elementary and secondary school.

he impressed me almost as he entered into my university, a major cradle ofchina's scientific and technological talents. at the time, members of the giftedclass all had to spend half a month studying by themselves the principles ofcalculus and then take an exam so that we could evaluate their self-studycapability. mr. wang scored the highest grade in that exam. he also exhibited akeenly whetted mind during class discussions. to my regret at the time, hisenglish was not as good as his mathematics or physics. but i noticed he made apoint of working especially hard in improving his english during his fiveundergraduate years with us. by now, he seems to be at least as proficient inenglish as most of his former classmates in the gifted class.

in my experience with mr. wang, i was impressed with not only his

extraordinary intelligence but also his ambitions and persistence. i amsure that mr. wang will be an outstanding student in any doctoral program thathe may care to enroll in. so i would like to support him firmly in his questrecommendation into account when considering his application. i would greatlyappreciate it you decide to accept him as he wishes.

wang is an impressive student because he has been forced to overcome thesignificant challenge of a serious illness during his freshman year. when ifirst met wang in my discrete math class, he did not appear to be anythingspecial to me. while his exam scores were good, they were not as high as i wouldnow expect of him. what i didn't know then was that due to his illness. wang wasattempting to take all of the difficult early mathematics courses at one time, including discrete mathematics, advanced mathematics, linear algebra, andpossibilities. while most

students found preparing for just one set of these exams difficult, wangwas overwhelmed by four of them. but in the end, he achieved an impressive scoreon the final exam, which made me conscious of his unusual determination hedemonstrates when confronting difficult challenges.

mr. wangi have often talked about a variety of mathematicscomputer scienceconceptsproblems. during these discussions, i always found him to bedelightfully intelligent. not only does he quickly understand the

conceptsproblems presented to him, he is able to analyze theseproblemspresent solutions. but perhaps most important is that wang's thinking isintensely rigorous. when looking at any question, he carefully scrutinizes itifhe finds any uncertain issues, he clears them up immediately. i believe thiskind of thought is essential to become an excellent computer programmer.

  Dear sir / madam,

The purpose of historical inquiry is not simply to present facts but to search for an interpretation of the past. The reason I want to study History is simply that it combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.

History is fascinating because society is constantly evolving and as a result, the history must evolve with it.

I seek enrolment in a program that not only maintains a superb reputation but that will also demand only the highest quality effort each of its students. I hope that you are able to give me the privilege of continuing my studies on the level demanded by your prestigious institution. I have applied all my abilities and diligence to getting into Oxford.

My aim has always been to excel in examinations, no matter how demanding they were. I made sure I achieved straight. As in all aspects of my studies. From my strong performance in my A level history exam to my past work experience, my background and qualifications have given me the skills to succeed in your program.Although school occupies most of my time, I have learnt the rewards of contributing towards school life and have been head student for two years. I take pleasure in debating issues that are important to me, and as part of my contribution I set up a school debating society. This position has improved my leadership, organisational and communication skills and, given me the chance to combine my theoretical knowledge and my interpersonal skills to successfully debate issues closely related to history.

Outside of academics, I am a keen sportsman, competitively playing hockey and football. Last year I participated in the AA regional school athletics finals, achieving first position. My other passion is swimming, I have been a member of Warwickshire swimming club for nine years. One of my biggest achievements has been taking the County Champion title and crowned the record holder in the men’s 200m butterfly.

My swimming practices have also given me the chance to complete my life guard qualification, enabling me to gain work as a lifeguard. My swimming ability also helps with my interest in scuba diving. Last summer I volunteered to assist with teaching scuba diving at a school in Italy. This experience was extremely valuable, improving my communication skills and the appreciation of different cultures and backgrounds.

For years, I have maintained a firm devotion to history. All of my experiences, coupled with a strong academic background, will allow me to embrace studying history at Oxford University.

  Yours sincerely,

Wang, I was impressed with not only hisextraordinary intelligence but also his ambitions and persistence. I am surethat Mr. Wang will be an outstanding student in any doctoral program that he maycare to enroll in. So I would like to support him firmly in his questrecommendation into account when considering his application. I would greatlyappreciate it you decide to accept him as he wishes.

  Yours sincerely

  Dear x,

I live in Pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs, guns andgovernments' blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;acountry where a former president is murdered in public, where the nation'sconstitution and parliament are suspended at the same time, and where the voiceof a common man is unheard.

Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a doctor. The idea of"scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued me.And then ithappened! The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust ofdisillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a doctor. However, theturmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels, and hencePolitics.

As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it isall-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is theomnipotent of Pakistan. It can mobilize public opinion, gear up propagandamachinery, make or repeal laws and what not.Backed up by public opinion, supportedby the majority of the legislators, armed with the means to keep the people in astate of ignorance, political power crosses the limits of dictatorialpowers.Political power, like the most powerful intoxicant, makes the persons inpower to forget social ethics, political morality and obligations.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be "a refugefor the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at thedeceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty game.Allthese political parties are votaries of democracy, but the way they conductthemselves inside their own parties is nothing but senselessauthoritarianism. Therefore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as aprofession, but what they don't realize is that if we don't take a stand thesystem can never be changed. Thus,I want to study Politics so I can come back tomy country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its people.IfI can inspire even a single person,it would be worth it.The world today isgrowing global. We are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when wethink of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,Ichose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.

Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.Iwould be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know abouttheir culture. This would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clearsome preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an activeparticipant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out ofwhich I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of thetwo students to be selected from my school to participate in the EnglishSpeaking Union '08.Moreover, I've taken part in Parliamentary style debatestoo. Therefore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and languagewill not be a barrier in my education.Furthermore, I have worked as an interneeat Al-Shifa Eye Hospital for a month in summers. Here I learnt how to deal withpatients, use the Auto Ref, handle files and punctuality. We also campaigned to aremote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patientsfree of cost.Another experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellowcolleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Children's Village.Inaddition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize anevent to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I enjoy Literature, especially the works of Shakespeare,TennesseeWilliams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.I'd be delighted to study in achallenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work andmy ability to think out of the box, keenness for Politics and my perception ofthings,I understand, gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself, and ifprovided with an opportunity,I'd make the university proud.

  Yours sincerely,

A wise man once said “how dreadful knowledge of the truth can be, when there’s no help in truth.” I think, out of all thoughtful things one can think about, this quotes is unique description of what the depth of Drama and the Performing Arts can do for people. By studying Drama, we can become a variety of people, trapped within one single mind, all trying to be freed and each with their own personality and poison. Humanity has helped Drama so much to produce narrative of such calibre, and characters of such depth and poise – characters, which can be as sweet and innocent, or can take the more disgusting side of what being a human is, being as evil as what thought possible

Performance Art explores the whole range of human emotion and can produce tremendous performances and visual experiences and with Drama, in particular, we can go further than flesh and blood and express ourselves as somebody else and take on this ‘mask’. The most profound thing I have found when studying Drama is that we can become any person in the entire world, and still be us

I have always had a love for the performing arts since I can remember; for there has never really been anything else I have ever wanted to do apart from act. But acting is not just a subject to study people, narratives or social issues – we can discover so many things about ourselves, why we perform a character this way: is it because this person is so much like us? There have been numerous qualities I have discovered about myself while participating in drama. In teaching, I have learn how to really connect with people and help them to explorer what their feelings produce and more notably, how we learn about others, about a single person just by the way they say a monologue

Teaching has been a great experience for me because it has given me the time to evaluate my own performance and teaching skill, learning to become that character just a little but more. This has also been enhanced by the performances I have taken part in, learning to work together in teams to realise the dream of the narration and the vision of the director (for nothing really exists without the vision or image)

While experiencing other aspects of the Performing Arts, I have found that is has increased my performance skill on whole and expended my knowledge on the performance world greatly, Dance, Art and English all focusing on similar issues such as the Commedia dell’arte, Henrik Ibsen, Physical Theatre and Movements and philosophies. These subjects have greatly complemented my time in Drama, and increased my confidence and ability in being a performer. Being involved in 5 consecutive school productions, 2 amateur productions, teaching experience and a student has really influence me concerning the determination I will put into a career in Drama and Acting, and just working with these people and directors have really bettered me in the way I act, see myself and carry on with my life. The Performing Arts is such a brilliant profession to work in, because there is so much opportunity to explore the world

I know that I can offer the performing arts the time, the expense and the spark that it deserves. There is nothing else in world that I would devote more time to than being on the stage or acting in the street, and with the passion and determination to succeed behind me, I will give that spark and flavour that acting and the performing arts is all about. I know I can offer so much, because it is the only profession where, maybe just for one night, I can become someone else and do a damn good job of being that person – and I can easily say that I can offer the world, because performance and acting is my whole world. As well as enjoying Drama, I have also taken a shine to Philosophy and finding the reason for irrationality, and I feel particularly moved in amazement by the work of Bob Fosse and George Orwell for their use of horror, sorrow and murder. And a great interest to the History of Art, because so much of the story of us is portrayed in Art and more so these days it is so unique how Art and Drama work together to produce movement, beauty and conception.
